IBM Information Server or DataStage Training: What are User-Defined Environmental Variables in DataStage?

What are user-defined Environmental Variables in DataStage?

IBM Information Server or DataStage 8.x provides default variables during the installation and can be used through out the project called environmental variables.

Hard-coding the values like user name, password, source file path locations in the programs is not the best practice and DataStage is no exception. The user-defined environmental variables are selected by using the DataStage Administrator in Projects tab under Properties -> General Tab -> Environment -> User Defined.

In IBM Information Server or DataStage, one of the ways the DataStage jobs are parametrized using the user-defined variables.

These variables are defined on the project level, they can be used across the project level. The default values are defined for the variables in the administrator and these values are passed to the DataStage jobs during the run-time. Continue reading

IBM Information Server or DataStage Training: What are Environmental Variables in DataStage?

What are Environmental Variables in DataStage?

IBM Information Server or DataStage 8.x provides default variables during the installation and can be used through out the project called environmental variables.

These variables are set for the project level and access the variables by logging into datastage administrator client and select Projects tab under Properties -> General Tab -> Environment…

IBM Information Server or DataStage 8 allows to create user defined environmental variables on the project level and can be used as job parameters in DataStage job design.

The IBM Information Server or DataStage Environmental variables are categorized into

  • General
  • Parallel

1. Operator Specific
2.Reporting
3. Compiler

  • User Defined

IBM Information Server OR DataStage Training: What is DataStage Administrator?

DataStage 8.x is an ETL (Extraction, Transformation and Load) tool used for processing the data to load into data warehousing. ETL Tools provide facility to Extract data from different different sources and load into target systems like data warehousing, Data Marts in Teradata,Oracle,Db2,SQL server etc. databases.

In the previous blog, we discussed about the features of administrator and administrator properties and different tabs. We will explore few more properties exists in the administrator.

In IBM Information Server or DataStage 8.x, the DataStage Administrator allows to read-only or editable projects and set up users.

IBM Information Server or DataStage: General

Enabling job administration in the Director client:

These features let WebSphere DataStage operators release the resources of a job that has aborted or hung, and so return the job to a state in which it can be rerun.

This procedure enables two commands in the Director Job menu:

  • Cleanup Resources
  • Clear Status File

Enable Runtime column propagation for parallel jobs If you enable this feature, stages in parallel jobs can handle undefined columns that they encounter when the job is run, and propagate these columns through to the rest of the job. This check box enables the feature, to actually use it you need to explicitly select the option on each stage.

Enable Runtime Column Propagation for new links. Select this to have runtime column propagation enabled by default when you add a new link in a WebSphere DataStage job. If you do not select this, you will need to enable it for individual links in the stage editor when you are designing the job.

Auto-Purging

Auto-purging is applied to all new jobs created in the project. Continue reading

IBM Information Server or DataStage Training: What is DataStage Administrator?

IBM Information Server or DataStage 8.x is an ETL (Extraction, Transformation and Load) tool used for processing the data to load into data warehousing. ETL Tools provide facility to Extract data from different non-coherent systems, cleanse it, merge it and load into target systems like data warehousing, ODS (Operational Data Store).

In IBM Information Server or DataStage 8.x, the DataStage Administrator allows creating and editing projects.

The client components in IBM Information Server or DataStage 8.x are DataStage Administrator, DataStage Director and DataStage Designer.

IBM Information Server or DataStage: What is DataStage Administrator?

DataStage Administrator is used to perform administrative tasks for individual projects located on a single InfoSphere DataStage.

Some of the Common Features of the Administrator are,

  • Configure Access control adding users and granting permission.
  • Enable/disable server tracing, view/delete trace files.
  • Schedule DataStage jobs.
  • Configure performance tuning settings.
  • Configure parallel processing jobs settings.
  • Create/set environmental variables.
  • Configure Mainframe settings.

DataStage Tutorials: DataStage Server history and it’s Components

When learning, DataStage Tutorials, it’s always a good idea to start with the history before we dive into the subject. In this article,  we will discuss about what is DataStage ( an ETL tool – Extraction, Transformation and Load), DataStage components (designer, Director and Administrator)  and it’s history.

Learning and mastering DataStage is more like playing a game.

IBM Information Server or DataStage 8.x is an ETL (Extraction, Transformation and Load) tool used for processing the data to load into data warehousing. ETL Tools provide facility to Extract data from different non-coherent systems, cleanse it, merge it and load into target systems and can connect to major databases like Teradata, Oracle, DB2, SQL Server etc.

DataStage Tutorials : DataStage Server Version History:

  • Initial version at VMark, developed DataStage ETL and UniVerse Database in 1996
  • VMark acquired UniData and renamed itself to Ardent
  • Ardent was acquired by Informix in 1999
  • IBM acquired Informix database business leaving the data  integration tools in April 2001
